Things to See Locally

The Soo Locks

Sault Sainte Marie is named for the rapids (the word "sault" means rapids) on the Saint Marys River. In the Ojibwe language, Sault Sainte Marie is called Bawating, The Place of the Rapids. The rapids on the river are the result of a 21-foot difference between the elevations of Lake Superior and the Saint Marys river.

Ships bypass the rapids on the Saint Marys by passing through the Soo Locks. The locks, gravity-driven, raise and lower ships using tens of millions of gallons of water. The lake freighters that pass through the locks can be over 1000 feet long. Amazingly, they navigate the locks with mere feet to spare on either side!

Tahquamenon Falls

It's a bit of a drive, but while you're in the UP, you might head up to see Tahquamenon Falls. The Tahquamenon Falls are the third largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. In the spring, the volume going over the falls will be high and well worth the trip. Tahquamenon State Park has 35 miles of hiking trails and some truly spectacular Eastern Hemlock.
